Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells, tissues, or organs, treating them as foreign invaders. This abnormal immune response leads to the production of autoantibodies, which target the body’s own cells, tissues, or organs, resulting in tissue damage, inflammation, and in some cases, organ dysfunction. An increasing number of studies have found that autoimmunity is associated with a variety of diseases, such as thyroid disorders, type 1 diabetes, and vasculitis.
Autoantibodies can serve as biomarkers for both the diagnosis and prognosis of autoimmune diseases. In many cases, they can be detected before clinical symptoms emerge, offering critical opportunities for selection of more effective treatment strategies. The target antigens corresponding to these autoantibodies can be utilized in various diagnostic methods (such as ELISA) to achieve highly sensitive disease detection.
